Travel Tuesday: John Fine-Lease ’20 & Devan Sheth ’22
John Fine-Lease ’20 and Devan Sheth ’22 traveled to Arnes, Norway with Assumption Assistant Coach for the Ice Hockey team, Paul Jenkins. This summer trip abroad entailed assisting in coaching a youth hockey camp for kids ages 7-15 while learning the different playing styles and methods the European game has to offer. John and Devan learned about the culture and way of life by living in a Norwegian house with Coach Jenkin’s long term friend, Morthen. “We learned about their diet, history, and overall way of life. Norwegians are a very laid back and hospitable people.”
John and Devan note the most rewarding part of their trip was being able to see the kids and players succeed at something they previously failed at, often numerous times. “Some children had difficulty doing the complex skating drills, however, they continuously worked at improving. When they succeeded, the look of accomplishment they had was an incredible reward for Devan and I.”
The trip to Norway has changed and inspired John and Devan to see the world through a different lens. “While the American way of life is very routine and busy, we often overlook certain facets of our everyday lives. We learned how to enjoy the little things of life on our trip to Norway. The people of Norway appreciate everything in their lives: nature, architecture, and relationships with one another. This trip has given Devan and I the chance to view the world around us with a more appreciative demeanor.”
