Sport Management

Enhanced by a partnership with the Worcester Red Sox, sport management students receive a solid grounding in marketing and management and learn how to deal with the complex professional and ethical issues they will encounter in the sports industry. Experiential learning ensures that coursework is augmented with real-world experience through internships and other opportunities.

Sport is more than a game, it’s now a multi-billion-dollar worldwide industry that has become a crucial element of our economy and culture. Behind the stadium and court lights a complex infrastructure, ranging from agents to journalists to trainers to event managers, work to support and manage that industry. Assumption’s sport management minor helps you to develop the skills to become a vital part of that team.

Worcester Red Sox Partnership
Assumption University is the higher education sponsor and one of the Worcester Red Sox’s 21 founding partners. Through this partnership, Assumption students benefit from internships and scholarships as the University enhances its commitment to the redevelopment and revitalization of Worcester.

Polar Park serves as a classroom for Assumption students where students are provided access to internships that complement the University’s academic programs in business studies, data analytics, human services and rehabilitation studies, the communications track in English, and many more. The partnership also expands students’ access to higher education in the form of scholarships from the Worcester Red Sox that will be matched by Assumption.

Sports management is open to all students interested in the area of the business of sport. While of direct appeal to business majors, it can also serve as a useful complement to students studying writing and mass communication who are also interested in the sports media field as well as economics students focusing on sports analytics.

Internships

Assumption career planning starts the day you arrive on campus. “Internship in Business” is a 3-credit seminar course in the Grenon School of Business that is available to all business students. The course provides hands-on experience and training, networking and informational interviews with professionals, and assessment of your personal career strengths and interests. You will spend a minimum of 120 hours working in the field. During the weekly seminar, students discuss how organizational behavior and management concepts apply to their individual placements.

Internships

Sport management internships are designed to expand the student’s current knowledge in the field. Students will gain experience in leading and planning Sports activities through an internship in professional/amateur sports organizations, sports commissions, and sports agencies (i.e., ‘sport-related’ sites) and work a minimum of 120 hours for the semester. This is a valuable opportunity for students to gain practical work experience, apply concepts and skills learned in the classroom, and develop professional contacts within the sports community.

Accelerated BA/MBA Dual Degree Program

Apply as a high school senior into the dual degree program with one application and benefit from being considered for a $2,500 Assumption Business Leader Scholarship (per year for 5 years), special programming, and the ability to take up to two MBA courses during your senior year.  We offer two tracks to choose from: Management and CPA (for accounting majors only).
